La
Torretta Bed and Breakfast and the Scheda family have been active
members of the Slow
Food movement, which in Italy started as an amiable protest
against fast food, following the opening of Mac Donalds in the famous
Piazza di Spagna in 1989: Italy's first threat of globalized food.

Italy
has remained very much attached to its culinary traditions and the
Slow food movement, with currently more than 80,000 members, promotes
the quality and diversity of many products, organizing a variety
of events such as tastings, dinners with a particular theme, and
visits to places of food and drink interest.

In december 2004 La Torrretta organized a slow food event for the
BBC
Countryfile programme, a festive occasion during which local
producers offered tastings of prize winning olive oil, ricotta cheese,
sausages made from a special mountain pig, and the locally made
organic ice cream - a speciality of La Via Lattea, another Casperia
slow food member.

Casperia
now has its own convivium run by
Innes Innocenti owner also of la Via
Lattea Organic Ice Cream, one of the first producers in Italy of organic gelato,
made in Casperia and exported all over Europe and served in cafes
and reataurants in the local Sabina area too. The convivium organises
Slow Food events and tastings, please check the Slow
Food calendar for details of events here and elsewhere. |
